A seemingly small failure related to the latches on the storage spaces in the second rows of 2022-2023 Range Rover and Range Rover Sports is leading to a recall. Suffice it to say, you might not want to keep any heavy objects in there.

Land Rover took its first steps to remedy the issue in January 2023, and launched a Product Safety and Compliance Committee investigation. That followed warranty claims received by the company that claimed that the latch in the second-row armrest stowage compartment could fail.

Naturally, that’s annoying because no one wants the armrest storage area lid in their luxury SUV to break and rattle around. However, the failure also means that the vehicles do not comply with federal regulations.

Why do regulators care about the lid of a storage compartment? Well, they say that it represents a safety issue. In the event of an accident, the contents of the compartment could go bowling around the interior of a vehicle, potentially harming an occupant, if they are not held in place by the lid.

Fortunately, Land Rover is not aware of any injuries, accidents, or fires coming as a result of this fault. However, it has received 29 warranty claims related to the second-row storage compartment lid.

As a result, it will recall 9,838 Range Rovers from the 2022-2023 model years, as well as 2,749 Range Rover Sports from the 2023 model year. That amounts to a total of 12,587 vehicles in the United States.

The automaker plans to start getting in touch with owners on June 30. They will be asked to return their vehicle to an authorized dealer, where the latch mechanism on the lid will be replaced. The repair will be made free of charge to the owner.
