Just shy of 1,800 Genesis GV60s from the 2023 model year are being recalled in the United States for what could be a serious issue with the rear driveshafts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall notice states that GV60 models with the available all-wheel drive powertrain have rear driveshafts that could fracture due to abnormal stress incurred during the manufacturing process.

If a rear driveshaft is to fracture, it could result in the loss of power and increase the risk of a crash.

An investigation into the issue was opened on March 9, 2023 after a report of fractured rear driveshafts on GV60 models sold in Korea and Europe. Hyundai then inspected vehicles at ports and vehicle processing centers in Korea and the UK and of the 333 vehicles inspected, some 29 GV60 models were found to have driveshafts with suspect damage.

While the car manufacturer is not aware of any incidents related to the issue in the United States, it has identified five incidents involving fractured rear driveshafts in vehicles from Korea and the UK.

A total of 1,790 GV60 models produced for the U.S. market between June 15, 2022 and February 10, 2023 are involved in the recall. Owners will be notified by first class mail by June 25 and instructed to bring their vehicle to a Genesis dealer where the left and right rear driveshafts will be replaced free of charge. Genesis will also reimburse any owners who have previously paid to have the issue fixed prior to the issuance of the recall.

The automaker notes that the improved driveshafts were produced using a properly aligned jig tool and have been fully inspected for abnormalities.
