An intriguing prototype of Ford’s popular Expedition SUV has been snapped by our eagle-eyed spy photographers, possibly hinting at an upcoming Tremor variant.

While it would be easy to ignore this Expedition prototype as simply being a tester for the standard model, there are a number of components that make it stand out and have prompted speculation that it is the rumored Tremor with a handful of new off-road-focused components.

The front fascia of this Expedition immediately stands out from the regular model thanks to the presence of a striking skid plate and a revised bumper that will contribute to improved approach and departure angles. Adding to the intrigue of this prototype is that it appears to have the same 18-inch wheels as the F-150 Tremor complete with a dark finish and a set of General Grabber A/T tires.

Ford Expedition Caught Testing With Off-Road Upgrades, Hinting At Upcoming Tremor Model

Ford has done an excellent job of hiding many of the updated components from prying eyes but it does appear as though this Expedition is rocking a tweaked grille as well as new headlights.

While Ford hasn’t actually talked about working on a Tremor version of the Expedition, Ford chief financial officer John Lawler did confirm earlier this year that it was planning new Raptor and Tremor models. While he didn’t state that the Expedition is one of the new models getting a different variant, the emergence of these spy shots certainly points towards the Expedition soon being offered as a Tremor. While it is possible a Raptor version of the SUV is also on the cards, we think that is less likely.
