Charging up an EV can take quite a while in even the very best situations. In an effort to innovate once again in the charging space, Tesla is introducing a diner with a movie theater and Superchargers – and it just received official approval from the city of Los Angeles.

Located on a corner at 7001 W. Santa Monica Boulevard, the Tesla Diner is an idea that CEO Elon Musk floated all the way back in 2018. “Gonna put an old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in LA,” he tweeted.

Over the years, that idea has slowly gained momentum. During its first annual investor day earlier this year, Tesla mentioned it again and showed off the photo in our lead image. Back in 2022, it had already submitted the appropriate paperwork to the city of Los Angeles including detailed drawings.

Those images show that it’ll be a two-story building with two separate movie screens and a total of 32 supercharging stations. The diner is a part of Tesla’s game plan to bring “really incredible charging experiences” to its customer base according to Senior Director for Charging Infrastructure Rebecca Tinucci.

Tesla has itself had quite the lead in the charging infrastructure segment for some time. Many other charging station networks seem to have major problems with delivering a reliable and simple experience. The Supercharger network, for the most part, doesn’t suffer from these sorts of problems.

That reliability was one major factor that Ford CEO Jim Farley mentioned as a benefit to customers who will soon be able to charge at Tesla stations. In fact, when the Tesla Diner finally opens its doors, it’ll likely have far more than just Tesla automobiles that come from far and wide to experience it.

That being said, we still don’t have a clear timeline as to when the diner will open up. The documents first uncovered by Teslarati show an approval date of July 18th but say nothing about a proposed opening date. What they do reveal is that Stantec Architecture is the listed architect with PCL Construction Services Inc. as the contractor hired to do the work.
