An original, unrestored 1970 Plymouth Superbird will be auctioned off next week and while it is 50 years old, we can’t think of many American muscle cars that are as cool as this one.

The Superbird was originally shipped new to Ed Ousley Chrysler Plymouth in Prestonsurg, Kentucky, and is thought to be the 200th example produced Despite its age, it has only been driven 5,444 miles (8,761 km) and has previously received an FIVA/HVA Preservation award at the Meadowbrook Concours of America in Rochester, Michigan. While it could serve as the basis for an epic restoration, it could easily be left and enjoyed as is.

When talking about the Superbird, it’s impossible not to mention its most iconic element; the towering rear wing. However, the wing is not the only element that catches the eye as the High Impact EV2 TorRed paint remains just as flamboyant in 2023 as it was back in 1970. It also rocks a black vinyl top, the iconic front nose cone, and the original 15-inch Rallye wheels that are wrapped in Goodyear F60-15 Polyglas GT tires. The polished exhaust tips and chrome rear bumper serve as the car’s pièce de résistance.

Among the key interior features of the car include the original bench seat, the Solid State AM radio, silver vinyl accents, a tinted windshield, and a column shifter.

Power is provided by the original 440 cubic-inch V8 engine that had 385 hp when it was new and is coupled to an A727 Torqueflite automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Despite the car’s age, it has power steering and disc brakes up front.

Mecum hasn’t provided a pre-auction sales estimate for the car. However, other 1970 Superbirds like this routinely sell for over $600,000.
