• Nissan is getting ready to unveil a new generation of the Elgrand minivan in Japan.
  • The model promises to bring futuristic styling and a self-charging hybrid powertrain.
  • The new Elgrand will make its debut later this year, with a market launch in 2026 or 2027.

Nissan has shared the first official teasers for the next generation of the Elgrand. Set to debut later this year, the new Elgrand promises futuristic design, a comfort-focused interior, and the latest hybrid technology, all in an effort to challenge the Toyota Alphard for the title of Japan’s premier minivan.

The teaser images point to a design heavily influenced by the Nissan Hyper Tourer concept from 2023, though expect a more subdued version for production. The front end sports a split headlight design, with slim LEDs and a grille that’s much more understated than its predecessor’s. It’s a futuristic look, but Nissan’s clearly not trying to scare anyone with it.

The profile will retain the signature sliding doors, providing easy access to the cabin. However, unlike the concept, the front doors will likely have a conventional opening mechanism. The rear end appears to be cleaner and more sculpted than before, with full-width taillights and an integrated roof spoiler that should improve aerodynamics.

While Nissan hasn’t yet revealed the interior, it’s safe to assume the cabin will be generously sized. The Elgrand will likely offer multiple seating configurations, including a flagship model with four independent seats for those who need more legroom than a first-class flight. And, naturally, the latest ProPilot ADAS suite will surely make an appearance.

The new Elgrand will be fitted with the third-gen e-Power self-charging hybrid system. This comprises a new version of the 1.5-liter gasoline engine working exclusively as a power generator and electric motors that power the wheels. Nissan claims that the new hybrid will bring “significant improvements in quietness and fuel efficiency”, while also being lighter.

The previous generations of the Elgrand were launched in 1997, 2002, and 2010 respectively. The fourth-gen model will debut in late 2025. According to Nissan, its market launch is scheduled for the fiscal year 2026, which ends in March 31 2027.

The outgoing Elgrand is priced from ¥4,082,100 ($29,000), serving as the flagship minivan of Nissan in Japan positioned above the smaller Serena and the LCV-based Caravan and NV200 Vanette.

The minivan will be one of the four new models that Nissan will launch in Japan by 2027, alongside the Leaf crossover, a kei car, and another mysterious debut that could be the Kicks SUV.
