Modifying a car as iconic as the Ferrari F40 is always going to stir controversy. For some enthusiasts, cars like these should be left stock, while for others, there’s nothing wrong with making an excellent car even better. At August’s Monterey Car Week, perhaps the single most tastefully upgraded F40 will head to auction, and according to estimates, could trade hands for as much as $2.8 million.

This 1992 F40 left the Ferrari factory like most others, painted in Rosso Corsa. The car spent its formative years in Italy before being exported to England in 1998. It remained in its original condition until 2021, when the owner contacted Furlonger Specialist Cars to request several changes.

First is the paint. Gone is the traditional shade of Ferrari red, and in its place is Azzurro Hyperion, which suits the F40 surprisingly well. It was also fitted with the same racing transmission as an F40 LM and also rocks an aftermarket Tubi exhaust and upgraded turbo wastegate, which should make the soundtrack truly unforgettable.

With some extra punch, the owner also decided to add bigger Brembo brakes. However, this necessitated having custom wheels fitted, as the originals were too small. Thankfully, rather than opting for a tasteless aftermarket option, the owner commissioned a bespoke set of 18-inch shoes that mimic the F40’s original wheels. The car also features a fully adjustable suspension from KW.

RM Sotheby’s is handling the sale of the car and notes it has been driven a touch under 32,000 km (19,000 miles). While that’s quite a lot for an F40, the interior looks to have been well-maintained and rocks blue bucket seats and a matching blue headliner.

This isn’t the only unique F40 to be sold over the past year. Last year, an F40 that was repainted in a special shade of Mint Green sold for $1.79 million during Monterey Car Week.
