• Faulty fuel pump could starve engine, causing sudden stalling and crash risk.
  • Alfa Romeo says owners won’t receive any prior warning before the pump fails.
  • Stellantis has confirmed 437 complaints, five crashes, and three injuries so far.

Alfa Romeo has long carried a reputation for being more passionate than practical, and now the brand finds itself recalling nearly 54,000 examples of the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV across the United States and Canada. At the center of the issue is a faulty fuel pump that can leave engines without the supply they need, a problem reportedly linked to several crashes and injuries.

The company explained that certain Giulia and Stelvio models were fitted with a fuel delivery module whose internal parts are vulnerable to heat. When that happens, the fuel flow rate can drop, potentially starving the engine and shutting the car down in motion. The real danger of a crash is obvious, and Alfa Romeo confirms drivers won’t get any advance warning before the failure occurs.

Affected Models

A total of 53,849 vehicles are affected by the recall. That figure includes 24,382 Stelvio SUVs from the 2018 and 2019 model years, built between April 12, 2017 and June 26, 2019. It also covers 29,467 examples of the Giulia from model years 2017 to 2019, manufactured between September 2, 2016 and June 26, 2019. After that date, Alfa Romeo confirms it discontinued use of the defective parts.

The timeline shows that Stellantis first became aware of the defect in August, after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a pre-investigation request. According to the report, the company has linked the issue to five crashes and three injuries as of September 9. North American records also show 437 customer complaints and field reports connected to the problem.

Owner notifications for the recall are scheduled to begin on October 29. What makes the situation more concerning is that Alfa Romeo has yet to finalize a repair for the faulty fuel pump, leaving affected drivers uncertain about when their cars will actually be fixed.

A Different Recall For Ram

The carmaking giant has also issued a second, unrelated recall this week. This one impacts a total of 1,761 2018 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 models assembled from May 21, 2018, to June 26, 2018. It’s been revealed that some Ram models may have been built with a curtain airbag inflator that could rupture without warning, potentially spraying material into the vehicle.

In this case, a fix has been developed and dealers have been instructed to replace one or both curtain airbags as required. Owners will be alerted to the recall starting on October 9.
