• Nissan revealed the Terrano concept in Beijing alongside a second SUV.
  • It slots between the Patrol and X-Trail, known as Rogue in the US.
  • A production version has been confirmed for select global markets.

Nissan has unveiled a pair of dramatic SUV concepts in Beijing, both of which will spawn new production models to be unveiled within the next year. Importantly, at least one of them will be sold in select global markets.

The most intriguing of the two concepts is known as the Terrano PHEV. Nissan has used the Terrano name in the past for a compact SUV sold between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s, but this new one is very different. In certain markets, it will slot between the larger Patrol and the X-Trail, known as the Rogue in the US.

Nissan has revealed precious few details about the Terrano PHEV, but it’s expected to share its body-on-frame chassis with Nissan’s Chinese Frontier Pro PHEV, built in partnership with local joint venture partner Dongfeng. As such, it may have the same powertrain, consisting of a 1.5-liter four-cylinder and an electric motor, resulting in a combined 429 hp (320 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.

Rugged And Stylish

While the designs of some new Nissan models are questionable, like the all-new electric Juke, it’s nailed the Terrano – at least in concept guise. The SUV sits tall and has an imposing front end with LED headlights and illuminated branding. There’s also a rugged-looking skid plate, tow hooks, and off-road lights.

The concept also has a host of other off-road parts, including rock sliders, roof rails, and squared-off, black wheel arches. Found at the rear is a spare wheel carrier positioned behind a large support bar.

Another One

Nissan’s second concept is the Urban SUV PHEV. It’s inspired by the Nissan NX8 and has been designed for young Chinese buyers. The frontend includes slick LEDs and a large lower black grille. Other interesting features include digital wing mirrors, LEDs at the rear, and no visible door handles, giving it an exceptionally sleek profile.

The carmaker hasn’t said what its long-term plans are for the Urban SUV PHEV, but it did confirm the production version of the Terrano PHEV will be sold in certain global markets, not just in China.
