• Cupra appears to be working on a high-performance Terramar.
  • Prototype sports four-tailpipe exhaust and lightweight wheels.
  • Crossover might be equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo packing 329 hp.

Cupra appears to be working on a hotter Terramar as spy photographers snapped a prototype undergoing testing on the Nürburgring. More interestingly, the crossover was transported to and from the track on the back of a trailer.

The prototype was covered during transit to keep curious onlookers in the dark. However, the model was tested undisguised at the Ring so there’s little left to the imagination.

Review: Cupra’s Top Terramar Is A More Exciting Tiguan

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to see as the mystery model looks virtually identical to the current crossover that shares its bones with the less athletic VW Tiguan. However, a closer inspection reveals lightweight wheels that are backed up by a high-performance braking system with red Cupra-branded calipers. We can also see a lightly revised rear end with a visible four-tailpipe exhaust system.

That’s not a lot to go on, but the cues hint at a new performance variant. As a refresher, the standard crossover offers a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 148 hp (110 kW /150 PS) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque. Customers can also get a 2.0-liter TSI engine pumping out 262 hp (195 kW / 265 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm).

Cupra also offers an eHybrid, which combines the 1.5-liter engine with an electric motor and a 25.8 kWh battery pack. This enables the plug-in hybrid to produce a combined output of 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS) and have an electric-only WLTP range of up to 75 miles (121 km).

While it’s too early to say what the mystery model is, it could be equipped with an upgraded 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing around 329 hp (245 kW / 333 PS). That’s just a guess, but we’ll likely find out relatively soon as the crossover appears almost ready for its big debut.
