• Mitsuoka will debut a new sports car this November.
  • Teaser sketch shows a sculpted body with retro details.
  • The two-seater could utilize the Mazda MX-5 platform.

Eccentric Japanese coachbuilder Mitsuoka has officially announced its next eye-catching creation with a teaser sketch. The upcoming model appears to be a two-seater roadster with retro styling cues, and is scheduled to debut in November.

The boutique automaker didn’t get into details, but most of its products are rebodied versions of existing production models, with the exception of the in-house developed Orochi supercar.

Judging from its proportions, the yet-unnamed roadster could be based on the underpinnings of the Mazda MX-5. This was the case for the Mitsuoka Rock Star that debuted in 2018 as a C2 Corvette impersonator based on the MX-5 ND, and the Mitsuoka Himiko riding on stretched MX-5 NC or ND bones.

The sketch has the signature of automotive designer Takanori Aoki, who penned both the Himiko and the Rock Star. The new model appears to have a custom body with round headlights, a large grille, side gills slightly reminiscent of the C1 Corvette, and sculpted rear fenders leading to a dropping tail. We can also see hints of a sharp splitter, sporty side skirts, and a matching diffuser.

If the roadster is indeed based on the MX-5 ND, it will likely come fitted with the naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which is good for 181 hp (135 kW / 184 PS). Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox.

More specifically, additional teasers of the roadster will be published on July, August, and September, ahead of the official announcement on November. Judging from earlier Mitsuoka models, it will likely be a limited production offering for the Japanese market.
