• Toyota updates the Alphard and Vellfire minivans.
  • The Alphard gains new PHEV Z and HEV G trims.
  • All variants now receive frequency-sensitive shocks.

Three years is about the point in a model’s life when the engineers start tidying up the loose ends. Toyota has done exactly that, handing the Alphard and Vellfire minivans a round of light updates in Japan. The focus this time is a wider electrified range, though the Alphard also gets a few changes aimed at how it rides.

Look closely and you won’t spot much. The two are visually unchanged save for a new Neutral Black exterior color. Inside, the Bronze Sputtering trim that was previously limited to the Executive Lounge trim is now standard across the lineup.

Furthermore, the Alphard rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with improved quality and a Hyperchrome Metallic finish. More importantly, all variants of the minivan are fitted as standard with frequency-sensitive shock absorbers for even greater comfort.

The biggest news for the Alphard is the addition of the new PHEV Z grade. Previously, the plug-in hybrid powertrain was exclusively locked behind the flagship Executive Lounge trim. By bringing it down to the Z grade, Toyota is lowering the barrier of entry for buyers seeking a PHEV option.

The Z is equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels finished in Silver Sputtering, a dual moonroof with electric shade, Ultrasuede headlining, genuine wood inserts, a leather steering wheel, a 14-inch infotainment, a 10-speaker audio, wireless charging, and Executive Power seats for the second row with heating and ventilation.

Additionally, the self-charging hybrid lineup grows with the inclusion of the HEV G trim. Standard equipment includes triple-eye LED headlights, power-adjustable and heated front seats, captain chairs for the second-row with heating, swivel armrest, and manual leg rests (ottoman), as well as the 14-inch infotainment with the Panoramic View Monitor.

Predictably, there are no changes under the hood, with both models offering a choice between gasoline, HEV and PHEV powertrains. The ICE and HEV are available in FWD and AWD guises, while the PHEV is exclusively offered with the E-Four AWD system.
