• The Spaceliner is a unique 1960 Ford Fairlane with a bubble canopy.
  • It features ten (10!) taillights taken from a 1959 Cadillac.
  • Ford’s original 223 cubic-inch inline-six engine still powers the car.

If you squint, you might recognize the shape of a 1960 Ford Fairlane. But take a closer look, and it’s clear this one is unlike any other. With its bubble canopy and futuristic lines, the one-off creation looks more suited to a sci-fi set than a suburban street. It’s scheduled to hit the auction block in September as part of Larry Klairmont’s expansive collection and is expected to draw plenty of attention.

Nicknamed ‘The Spaceliner,’ this one-off Fairlane reimagines mid-century Americana through the lens of Atomic Age optimism. The lower half of the body is familiar for a Fairlane of this era, meaning it retains the original four circular headlights and chrome front bumper.

It also features the same sharp shoulder line stretching the full length of the car, and has similar door skins to the original. However, the original door handles have been removed.

Jet-Age Canopy Meets Cadillac Flair

The entire cabin of the Ford has then been chopped off. Sitting in its place are two jet-fighter-inspired Perspex bubbles over the front and rear seats. While these clear domes likely significantly reduce headroom, particularly in the second row, they certainly make the car stand out.

A glistening shade of blue adorns the entire body of The Spaceliner. The changes continue at the rear, where 10 taillights from a 1959 Cadillac have been fitted, adding to the spaceship vibes.

Custom Interior With Period Drama

As with several other cars being sold by Mecum Auctions from Klairmont’s collection, the interior of this Fairlane is also very flamboyant. The dashboard has been painted in the same color as the exterior, and the front and rear seats have been retrimmed in white upholstery. Some fluffy materials have also been added to the dashboard and behind the rear seats.

A look inside the engine bay shows that it has also been resprayed, but the original 223 cubic-inch inline-six cylinder engine has been retained. This engine continues to be mated to an automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.

According to Mecum, the car has been signed by car builders Gene Winfield and Darryl Starbird, and at Miami Art Basel 2017, it was selected as Judge’s Favorite by Paolo Pininfarina. The bespoke Fairlane has 41,815 miles (67,294 km) on the clock, but we’d be shocked if the next owner does anything other than store this car away in a garage.

Whether you’re into chrome, Fords, or just cars that look like they could leave Earth, this one’s worth a look. Check out the listing here and prepare to question everything you thought you knew about Fairlanes.
