• A Porsche 996 Cabriolet has sat untouched in Amsterdam for over a year.
  • Despite neglect, its parking permit is paid, preventing authorities from towing it.
  • Locals have speculated the owner may be missing, jailed, or living abroad.

Looking more like a prop from The Last of Us, this Porsche 911 Cabriolet has been slowly being reclaimed by the weeds of Amsterdam. It is not some AI fever dream or a still from a dystopian blockbuster, but a very real car that has apparently not budged an inch from its parking spot in over a year.

Despite the creeping foliage trying to claim it, the black 996 Porsche 911 still looks remarkably presentable, its paintwork holding up better than you might expect. The only real scar is a hefty dent in the rear bumper, the sort of mark that hints at either a careless knock or someone’s idea of fun with a shopping cart.

A Sports Car Left in Limbo

Business cards from hopeful dealers are tucked against the windows, each one an open offer to take the car off the owner’s hands. Its roadworthiness certificate is said to have expired last year, yet the parking permit remains up to date, which explains why the car has not been removed by the authorities.

Locals have noticed the forgotten Porsche for some time. Speaking to Dutch outlet NH Nieuws, one resident said he moved into his apartment across the street about 15 months ago and has never seen the car touched, let alone moved. “It’s always there,” he said. “It’s strange. I’ve never seen anyone touch it. It’s never been moved. I have no idea what’s going on.”

The same Porsche appears in a Google Maps photo from May 2024.

Photos from Google Maps show the car parked in the same spot back in May 2024, when it appeared to be in better condition. Theories about the absent owner range from travel abroad to imprisonment, something that would explain their lengthy absence. Even the dealer who sold the 911 to the latest owner has no idea of their whereabouts, as their phone is no longer active.

The Porsche 996 remains one of the most controversial generations of the 911, largely due to its “fried egg” headlights and the introduction of a water-cooled engine. The model was introduced in 1997 and remained in production until 2004. The pictured 996 is a facelifted Carrera Convertible.

From Luxury To Question Mark

We checked an online license plate database, which shows this 911 was first registered in 2003 with a price tag of €124,446, around $146,900 in today’s money. Now, dealers suggest it could sell for €20,000 to €25,000 ($23,600 to $29,500), though only if someone is willing to put in the effort to restore it properly.

For now, the abandoned Porsche remains an unsolved dusty riddle in Amsterdam. Whether its owner eventually returns to reclaim it, or it ends up sold and revived by someone else, the car’s story is far from finished.
