• Jeep recalled nearly 25,000 Wrangler 4xe SUVs after a bad update.
  • The glitch caused hybrid systems to reset and lose communication.
  • Drivers reported sudden power loss, but no accidents were recorded.

Following a disastrous over-the-air update, Jeep is recalling 24,238 Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrids. A software error can result in a loss of drive power and multiple owners have complained about a host of issues, including vehicles that completely bricked themselves.

According to the government agency, the software update may cause “incomplete communication between the Telematics Box Module and the Hybrid Control Processor.”

This can result in the latter performing a reset, which causes a loss of propulsion if it occurs when the vehicle is being driven.

There’s no warning before a reset and Stellantis became aware of the issue on October 14. On that day, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Defect Division called the automaker to say they had received over 200 complaints about the update and seen problems mentioned online.

The issues were so widespread that Transport Canada Defect Complaints also contacted Jeep on October 14. They had received seven reports and seen problems mentioned on forums.

The company immediately began looking into the issue and discovered 111 customer assistance records, 69 field reports, and 55 other incidents potentially related to the issue between October 10 and October 14.

While a final remedy is still under development, the company pushed out an “interim corrective action.” Details are limited, but it makes changes to the “backend policy” to “avoid loss of motive power.”
