• Corvette ZR1X sold for $2.6M at Barrett-Jackson auction.

  • Custom ZR1X features special Dark Satin Steel paint finish.

A one-off Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X just hammered for an eye-watering $2.6 million at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction, more than 12 times the standard $207,395 MSRP of Chevy’s top-tier performance car. But before anyone gets too caught up in sticker shock, there’s an explanation, and a good one. The car was sold for charity, and the winning bidder wasn’t just anyone.

This special Corvette ZR1X is inspired by the Stars & Steel limited-edition version that Chevrolet announced in December, capped at just 250 units to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Star-Spangled Paintwork

Finished in a custom shade called Dark Satin Steel, the car’s paint was developed by GM’s Design Fabrication team and looks absolutely spectacular. Layered into that finish are racing stripes embedded with dozens of stars, a nod to the American flag

Every great supercar benefits from a dash of color, and this ‘Vette doesn’t hold back. Bright blue brake calipers pop behind the wheels, while matching blue lettering accents the carbon fiber rear wing. Inside, the theme continues with Santorini Blue leather trim.

The winning bidder was none other than Rick Hendrick, the man who has purchased the first example of pretty much every American performance car of note over the past decade. Compared to some of his previous purchases, the ZR1X might even count as a relative bargain in his world. Just a year ago, he spent $3.7 million to claim the first C8 ZR1.

All of the money raised from the auction will benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which aims to provide mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children. The foundation also builds custom smart homes for seriously injured veterans and first responders, and provides housing and services for homeless veterans.

“General Motors and Chevrolet have proudly stood with Tunnel to Towers in honoring those who serve and sacrifice for our nation,” Tunnel to Towers Foundation chairman and chief executive Frank Siller said.

“This incredible gift will help us continue delivering on our promise to never forget the families of our fallen heroes and to ensure our catastrophically injured veterans can live their lives with the dignity and independence they deserve,” he added.
