- Ram has big hopes for the 2027 ProMaster City’s return.
- The company sees it filling a long overlooked van segment.
- It arrives larger than before and priced below key rivals.
The Ram ProMaster City bowed out at the end of the 2022 model year as automakers turned their backs on commercial vans. The exodus was widespread as Chevrolet dropped the City Express, while Nissan pulled the plug on their NV lineup. If that wasn’t enough commercial van blood, Mercedes phased out the Metris and Ford axed the Transit Connect in America.
This left fleets and businesses with relatively few options including the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, and Ram ProMaster. They’re joined by the ancient Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana. For shoppers, it’s been like trying to find a prom date at an all boys school.
A Mid Size Gap Refilled
As Ram’s Dave Sowers explained, this lack of variety forced consumers to make a lot of compromises. Some decided to wait on the sidelines and hold onto their existing vehicles as the latest crop of commercial vans didn’t fit their needs. Others ended up getting something new, but it might have been too big or aimed at retail shoppers.

These situations are far from ideal, but Ram thinks they have the solution with the 2027 ProMaster City. It’s significantly larger than its predecessor, without being massive. Officials told us that’s what customers wanted and they’ll be delighted to learn the new van is 22.9 inches (582 mm) longer than the old model. It’s also big enough to accommodate pallets as well as 4×8 sheets of drywall or plywood.
America’s Cheapest Commercial Van
Besides improved capability and modern driver assistance systems, the new van is expected to cost less than $40,000. That should make it the cheapest commercial van in America.
This is huge news as the Transit Cargo starts at $48,400, while the Sprinter begins at $48,990. It should even undercut the GM twins, which carry an MSRP of around $42,200. On top of that, there’s plenty of space beneath the regular ProMaster as the 2026 Cargo variant retails for $46,370.

Ram believes the combination of size, price, and capability will win over professional customers and fill a significant hole in the market. They also noted there will be two trims as well as 11 different configurations. This includes panel and passenger vans with up to eight seats.
It’s hard to argue with their belief as the ProMaster City appears well-suited for the commercial market and a strong value play on top of that. While it certainly isn’t the most exciting thing Ram has cooked up, it will be the only mid-size commercial van in the United States and dealers are said to be delighted about the model’s return. Furthermore, it makes a lot of business sense as the model is essentially a reworked European van.
