Even in quiet suburban neighborhoods, a sense of safety can hinge on just a few seconds of chance. A motorcyclist in San Antonio, Texas, and four children on a nearby sidewalk were fortunate to escape serious harm after the rider crashed near a suburban intersection and the bike burst into flames.

The crash occurred on the afternoon of April 2 at 3:30 p.m. while a group of four children was near the T-intersection. Vision captured from the security camera of a nearby house shows that suddenly, a sliding motorcycle and the rider came into view, skimming across the road before the bike slammed into the curb.

Immediately, the motorcycle burst into a ball of flames and spiraled through the air, striking a light post and ricocheting towards the base of a tree, sending flames and gas spilling from its tank. It appears the inferno came within feet of the children, who can be seen swiftly running away from the scene.

The rider also hit the curb and was covered in flames. He can be seen sprinting across the road in a panic before running into a grassy area near the road. According to KOAT7, the man suffered second-degree burns and was transported to a local hospital. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear as though he suffered any other injuries despite sliding across the road and hitting the curb.

It’s unclear how the rider lost control of the bike, but the New York Post suggested he was speeding. Residents in the local area have called for speed bumps to be installed throughout the neighborhood, noting that preventable crashes are nothing new.
