• The company says 2.9 percent of all recalled models could be impacted.
  • The Forester’s glass roof panel may be improperly bonded to the frame.
  • Subaru is aware of three technical reports about Forester sunroof issues.

Subaru is warning owners of 2026 Forester and Forester Hybrid models that their sunroofs could fly off mid-drive, effectively turning these rugged crossovers into impromptu targa tops. A working sunroof is a fine thing. One that departs the car at speed is rather less fine.

The company says that affected Forester models have moonroof assemblies where the glass panel may have been improperly bonded to the sliding frame. Because of this, the bonding adhesion between the glass panel and the sliding frame could deteriorate over time, causing the glass roof to “become detached during usage of the vehicle.”

The risk isn’t really to the people inside the Forester. It’s to whoever is following behind and suddenly has to dodge a sheet of airborne glass.

A total of 69,663 vehicles are involved in the recall. These consist of 65,656 standard Forester models built from June 19, 2025, to March 13, 2026, and 4,007 Forester Hybrids built from February 20, 2026, to May 17, 2026. Subaru believes that 2.9 percent of the recalled models have the defect, which amounts to around 2,020 units.

Subaru Warns New Forester Owners Their Sunroof Could Fly Off Mid-Drive

Subaru started an investigation into the issue in February after receiving a report about a Forester’s sunroof flying off. It was quickly discovered that a supplier may have manufactured the roof assemblies without properly applying the bonding agent, designed to stick the glass panel to the sliding frame. A total of three technical reports have been sent to Subaru regarding the issue, although there are no reports of crashes or injuries.

Owners will be alerted to the recall before July 24. Dealers will inspect the glass panels for proper adhesion and, if necessary, replace the assembly at no cost.
