Long before the Porsche Carrera GT became a canvas for Zagato, Canepa, and most recently the foundation for a brand-new, American-made supercar, Gemballa was the name that mattered in modified Carrera GTs. The German tuner got there first and built its reputation on the car while others were still working out what to do with it.

Gemballa revealed its version, the Mirage GT, in 2007, shortly after Porsche wound down production of the V10 supercar. The German outfit eventually convinced 25 Carrera GT owners to upgrade their cars, and now one of them is heading to auction.

This particular Mirage GT, number 24 of the 25 built, will be sold by Mecum Auctions at its Monterey sales event. It’s one of just a handful thought to be in the United States and was apparently one of the priciest Mirage GTs built.

The exterior wears Lime Rock Gray Metallic with several Sun Yellow accents, including the headlight clusters, badging, and engine covers. As part of the makeover, Gemballa gave the car all-new bodywork, including a bespoke front end with a dramatic bumper and hood.

The changes continued along the sides with new skirts, while up top is a large roof scoop, something we think the Carrera GT should have originally left the factory with. There’s plenty going on at the rear of the Porsche too, including a large rear wing, a new diffuser, and unique quad tailpipes.

What Else Is Special?

Gembella’s upgrades continue into the cabin and include Slate Gray Alcantara with Yellow stitching, nicely complementing the exterior finish. There’s also loads of carbon fiber, including on the transmission tunnel and dashboard. The Mirage GT also has a more modern infotainment display than an original Carrera GT.

If a supercar like this were built today, we suspect a tuner might look to add forced induction to the 5.7-liter V10, eager to extract as much power from it as possible. Gembella didn’t do that, leaving the engine untouched, except for the addition of the new stainless steel exhaust, bringing power up to 645 hp.
