If you, or your mechanic, recently fitted a new K&N fuel filter to your car, it needs to come back out and go straight in the trash, replaced with an original filter or another compatible unit. Until that swap happens, K&N is telling owners not to drive their vehicles at all, because the filter carries a potential fire risk. That’s not a warning to file away for the weekend.
What’s gone wrong? After analyzing Amazon reviews and receiving two calls from customers, K&N started looking into a batch of fuel filters manufactured between July 1, 2025, and July 23, 2025. It quickly discovered that under certain higher temperatures, the O-rings used are susceptible to disintegration within the fuel filter.

If this happens, fragments of the O-ring can clog the fuel lines and cause engine performance issues, or potentially trigger a small leak in the fuel filter. If this happens, it could result in performance issues, potentially triggering a crash. Worse still, leaking fuel could trigger a fire.
K&N says the defect has likely been caused by a change in the material used for the O-rings. It notes the fuel filters were manufactured by Shanghai Jin Da Imp/Exp Corp in China.
Which Filters Are Faulty?
A total of 44,053 fuel filters are being recalled in the United States, and 100 percent of them are thought to have the issue. Impacted part numbers include K&N 81-0300, K&N 81-0301, SPE-2369, SPE-2358, and SPE-6932. After discovering the issue, K&N ceased shipments from the supplier responsible and has discontinued impacted fuel filters.
Customers are being asked to immediately remove the fuel filter and replace it with an OEM one or one from another manufacturer, as K&N will not be offering replacements. However, the company will refund the purchase price of the recalled fuel filters, once shoppers provide it with proof of purchase.
