The Mazda MX-5 ND has been around since 2014, but it remains the only Miata generation never available in yellow from the factory. Four Japanese dealers teamed up to change that, creating the Mazda Roadster FSW Ver. 2 special edition, limited to just six units.
Sunflower Yellow was a factory option in the MX-5 NC, following the Blazing Yellow Mica of the NB and the Sunburst Yellow of the NA. Now, the color returns for a special appearance in the Japanese-spec ND MX-5 thanks to local dealerships Kanto Mazda, Shizuoka Mazda, Tokai Mazda, and Koshin Mazda.

The six FSW Ver. 2 units will be based on brand-new models, and more specifically the Roadster S Special Package trim finished in Jet Black Mica. Each car will undergo a complete tear-down and hand-finished respray by Mazda Engineering & Technology (Mazda E&T). The latter is a Hiroshima-based subsidiary of the automaker responsible for building concept cars, meaning the finished result is expected to be of excellent quality.
The new color is combined with a subtle aero package, including a splitter, side skirts, a rear diffuser, and a rear spoiler, all finished in Brilliant Black, and joined by blacked-out badging and Jet Black door handles.
Inside, the team added Sunflower Yellow accents on the door cards, climate vent rings, and smart key fob. The special yellow models are also fitted with the optional Touring Package, which adds adaptive LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, heated seats, and a digital TV tuner for the infotainment display.

Under the hood, the special edition retains the standard naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which offers 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) and 152 Nm (112 lb-ft) of torque after the latest updates in Japan. The mill is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.
The Mazda Roadster FSW Ver. 2 is priced at ¥4,708,000 ($29,900). While the donor vehicle costs ¥3,256,000 ($20,600), the price represents a discount compared to the combined cost of ¥4,871,979 ($30,900) that includes the ¥1,452,000 ($9,200) paint job and another ¥163,979 ($1,000) for the aero package.

The problem is that only six people will get to buy the Sunflower Yellow MX-5. The lucky owners will be chosen through a lottery held on October 3 and 4 at the Fuji Speedway in Japan during the Mazda Fan Festa event. Buyers will also receive a certificate of authenticity and an all-inclusive two-day VIP tour at Mazda’s headquarters, E&T facilities, and museum in Hiroshima.
If you are wondering about the Ver. 2 moniker, it is because the same four dealers had unveiled the Roadster FSW Ver. 1 at the same event one year ago. This one was capped at five units and featured a custom Hunter Green wrap, paying homage to the Neo Green color of the NA Eunos Roadster V Special.
