May the God of speed watch over these motorcycles, ATVs and scooters, because the NYPD bulldozers sure didn’t.

In an attempt to get rid of the illegal all-terrain-vehicles from the streets of Big Apple, the New York city government live fed a video showing the destruction of seized off-road motorcycles, ATVs and scooters.

The vehicles were lined up between NYPD barriers and crushed by two bulldozers, Fox News reports, quoting NYPD Commissioner William Bratton when saying that nearly 700 bikes were confiscated this year – many operated by unlicensed “nitwits” who weren’t even wearing helmets.

According to the City of New York Government’s Facebook page, mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bratton (who waved a checkered flag before kicking off the proceedings) have repeatedly said that illegal all-terrain vehicles found on the streets of New York will be confiscated and destroyed. They even came up with the #UseItAndLoseIt hashtag.

Although the action carried out by the officials might be praised by some NY residents, many commentators on the video considered it a “waste”, determining the public office to come up with an explanation to one post:

“Hi, Terrell. Thank you for your question — you and several others have flagged this. We checked with NYPD and here’s what we can tell you. These vehicles are illegal in the City of New York. We are committed to making the streets of our city completely safe. That means leaving no opportunity for these things to find their way back to our roads and further endanger our fellow New Yorkers. This is the same reason we destroy the guns we confiscate. The metal from these vehicles is recycled after they are crushed.”
