For over a year now, we suspected that BMW was contemplating a smaller version of the X6, or if you prefer, a sportier, fastback variant of the X3.
Considering that the X5’s sportier but less practical and for some, more awkward looking, sister has proved to be a huge sales success, it would be a logical move to expand the lineup to include a similar model.
As it turns out, BMW officials have the same mindset. The Munich-based company’s CEO, Norbert Reithofer, has confirmed in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport that the X4 will indeed be built.
“Yes, we will position a new model, called X4, between the X3 and the X5”, said Reithofer. The BMW boss also revealed that it will be around 4.65 meters long (the same as the X3) and will use the X3’s four- and six-cylinder engine range, with outputs ranging from 184HP to 306HP.
Reithofer did not give a timeline on the X4’s market launch. However, he did say that the four-seater model with the coupe-like roofline will be available with all-wheel drive, automatic start/stop system, head-up display and voice recognition systems, and that its boot capacity will be smaller than the X3’s 500 lt.
