Almost all motorsport racing series are over, so it’s time for the Race of Champions, an annual challenege between drivers competing in different kinds of racing such as Formula 1, WRC and DTM.

This year’s event was held last weekend at the Esprit arena in Dusseldorf, with the VW Group providing many of the cars like the VW Scirocco R, the Audi R8 LMS and the Skoda Fabia S2000. It also displayed its brand-new 300HP Polo R WRC, with which it will enter the world rally championship in 2013 in front of the crowd for the first time.

The entry list was quite impressive as it included Formula 1 world champions Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button, as well as DTM champions Martin Tomczyk, Timo Scheider and Mattias Ekstrom.

None of them even made it to the final face-off, though. The pair that battled for the title of Champion of Champions was eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen and WRC’s rising star, and VW Motorsport latest signing, Sebastien Ogier.

Despite participating for the first time ever, Ogier was the eventual winner. “My first outing on VW overalls and this in Germany and then victory in the Race of Champions – I’m absolutely delighted”, said the 27-year old Frenchman.

Even his much more experienced opponent, Kristensten, commented that “Sebastien really impressed me and he certainly has a big future ahead of him in rallying with Volkswagen.”
