The BMW Group announced a global recall of approximately 235,00 turbocharged Mini models because of an issue with the circuit board controlling the electric auxiliary water pump that cools the engine’s turbocharger.

The company said that the circuit board might malfunction and overheat which could result in a vehicle fire adding, however, that there have been no reports of any injuries or accidents related to the glitch.

In the U.S., the safety recall concerns a total of 88,911 vehicles. These include certain model year 2007-2011 Mini Cooper S, 2008-2011 Mini Cooper S Clubman, 2009-2011 Mini Cooper S Convertible, 2009-2011 Mini Cooper JCW, 2009-2011 Mini Cooper JCW Clubman, 2009-2011 Cooper JCW Convertible, and 2011 Cooper S Countryman passenger cars built from November 14, 2006, through January 18, 2011.

The automaker said that it will notify owners of the affected models and have dealers replace the entire water pump unit free of charge. In the States, the recall is expected to begin during February 2012.
