Residents of Baltimore’s Charles Village neighborhood witnessed the wrath of nature on Wednesday when a retaining wall collapsed on 26th Street sending about half a dozen cars, streetlights and sidewalks onto the CSX rail tracks below. Luckily, no one was injured.

“It’s just like the ground opened up and the cars kind of slid down. The whole retaining wall gave way with a giant crash,” Nels Schumacher told CBS News.

Another eyewitness said: “We stood back and then within a 10-second period of time the whole… it’s like the ground opened up and the cars just kind of slid down and the whole retaining wall just gave way.”

The Baltimore Sun reported that the retaining wall that collapsed “amid a month’s worth of rain” was nearly 120 years old and had “troubled Charles Village residents for decades”. Authorities are still investigating the cause.
