Polestar may add the XC60 and XC90 SUVs to its lineup of high-performance Volvos, the company’s owner Christian Dahl confirmed.

While Polestar currently offers engine upgrades for the entire Volvo lineup, only the S60 and V60 are offered with the complete package of engine, chassis, body and interior upgrades. The V40 hatch will soon be added to Polestar’s lineup, but after that the company will set its sight on Volvo’s SUVs.

“Now we have the credibility from motorsport and the sedan models then I think we can expand the brand into the SUV segment. And maybe to start with we can do a small one, with the XC60 and then we can do the XC90. I can definitely see that happening in the future,” Dahl told Australia’s Drive.

The executive also said that the upcoming Volvo V40 Polestar will likely be powered by the new generation 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine currently under development by Volvo with assistance from Polestar. Based on Volvo’s new range of Drive-E engines, the unit will produce up to 450 hp.

While Dahl didn’t say how much power future four-cylinder Polestar models will offer, he said the new engine will have more benefits than the current 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo.

“It’s a really small engine. Within a car that’s big like an S60, being small gives you advantages in terms of packaging, what you can do with suspension. When the new platform comes in the XC90, the SPA platform, when that comes in the S60 and V60 in a couple of years that gives you such a big advantage with how you can package it. It’s going to be a fantastic chassis,” Dahl said.
