Auto Express puts the new VW Polo GTI against the Mini Cooper S raising another hot hatch debate.

VW updated the Polo GTI with a turbocharged 1.8-litre 189hp engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, marking the return of the third pedal for the small supermini after its predecessor was available only with a DSG transmission. The latest Polo GTI looks a lot like a smaller Golf GTI and wants to offer the same excitement with its bigger brother, albeit in a smaller package.

The latest Mini Cooper S is using a 2-litre turbocharged unit with the same horsepower and according to Auto Express, delivers plenty of thrills and excitement while remaining retro and instantly recognizable.

When comparing hot-hatches the process to find out which is better is simple: find out which is faster in a straight line, then which is more fun to drive and then decide which one suits you best.

Auto Express has a winner so go to the video to find out.
