Mitsubishi and Toyota are going hand-in-hand with their new truck-based SUVs that are set to be revealed in the coming weeks.

After seeing a multitude of photos of Toyota’s new Hilux-based 2016 Fortuner ahead of its July 19 debut, Mitsubishi’s rivaling Pajero Sport was captured while filming a commercial.

Mitsubishi’s tough SUV, which is known under different names across the world, including Montero Sport, Nativa, Pajero Dakar and Challenger, is built on the Japanese brand’s new L200 pickup truck that was introduced at the Geneva motor show this year.

In these pictures that come courtesy of the Headlightmag forums, the new Pajero Sport appears to have a swoopier and more futuristic design (see how close our Future Car rendering came to the actual SUV here), not only from the SUV it replaces, but also, from many of its competitors, including the aforementioned 2016 Toyota Fortuner and Chevy’s Trailblazer (not for North America).

Set to have its world premiere at the 2015 Bangkok International Grand Motor Sale on August 1, the new-gen Pajero Sport will likely be available with the same engine-lineup as the L200, offering a 2.4-liter turbo diesel in two states of tune (154PS and 181PS) or a 2.5-liter turbo diesel with 128PS and 178PS (depending on the market), together with a 128PS 2.4-liter four-pot petrol.
