Volvo Cars has announced that three quarters of the orders for their new XC90 SUV, are for the top of the range Inscription model. Which does come as a surprise.

According to Alain Visser, Senior VP for Marketing, Sales & Customer Service, “With six per cent of customers choosing the top end Inscription model, it is fair to say that we have now entrenched our position as a premium car maker.”

Even though Visser may sound like he’s gloating a bit, he’s actually making a very fair point. People are recognizing the all-new XC90 as a luxury SUV, even though one could argue that the Momentum, perhaps with an extra feature or two, is a better buy – but that would be somewhat pointless at that price range.

In total, Volvo has received nearly 57,000 orders for the new XC90, well over their initial forecast of 50,000. Consequently, the company is running three shifts at its plant in Torslanda, Sweden (yes, in spite of being owned by Chinese, it still makes cars in its homeland) in order to meet demand.

If the XC90 keeps its momentum (pun intended…), it may even become one of the top three best selling models in its class by the end of the year. Not bad, Volvo. Not bad at all.
