Mercedes-Benz is working on an electric vehicle that will offer a range of up to 500km (311 miles) said Thomas Weber, Chief of Development on a recent interview.

“We are working on an intelligent concept for a highly attractive electric vehicle with a range of 400-500km (228-311 miles),” Weber said in an interview for German magazine Auto Motor Und Sport.

Weber also said that the new electric powertrain will fit into the company’s flexible architecture, meaning that it could spawn more than one future models. Chances are that Mercedes is developing not just a regular sedan model like the Model S but a crossover too, just like the production version of Audi’s E-Tron Quattro concept which is expected to debut in the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Tesla is also about to start deliveries of the Model X electric crossover while BMW is reportedly developing an all-electric model based on the next 5-series to take place next to the i3 and i8 models.

Mercedes has already produced purely electric vehicles, albeit in very limited numbers, like the B-Class Electric Drive and the 740hp SLS AMG Electric Drive which was powered by no less than four electric motors close to its wheels, making it effectively a AWD electric supercar.
