Unless you’ve been shooting the latest Peter Jackson blockbuster somewhere deep in New Zealand’s forests or an astronaut in the ISS, you should know by now that der neuer Neunelfer has switched to turbocharging.

Not since the adoption of water cooling for the 996 has Porsche made such a significant turn in the engine department. The flat-six configuration is still intact (at least for now…), but the displacement has shrunk to 3.0 liters and the addition of twin turbos has increased power to 370 PS (365 HP) for the Carrera and 420 PS (414 HP) for the Carrera S, both of which are up 20 PS compared to its predecessors.

In case you haven’t done so already, there is tons of information on the 991.2, as the IAA-bound revamped 911 is code-named, on how faster, cleaner and what-have-you the new car is compared to the “old” one.

Of course, there’s the official launch video, too. As it happens, it’s overlaid with a soundtrack and, even though you can hear the exhaust, the sound has been digitally mastered.

Thus, here’s your first chance to hear the new 911 Carrera S at the Hockenheim track, and one with the optional, center-mounted sports exhausts at that, and listen to how the sport button changes the exhaust note.

Is it us or has the new unit lost some of the naturally-aspirated one, now consigned to history, aural appeal? What say you?
