Make no mistake, this is the biggest change in the 911’s long career, as Porsche went to turbo town with their iconic model.

The facelifted Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S parted ways with their naturally aspirated boxers for the sake of an all-new, twin-turbo 3.0-litre flat-six engine. The latest iteration of the 911 embraced the forced induction tech, mainly because Porsche wanted to bring emissions down but not without the key figures looking deliciously good.

The base-spec Porsche 911 Carrera now makes 370PS (365hp) and 450Nm (332lb ft) of torque, with the Carrera S making 420PS (414hp) and 500Nm (369lb ft). Both models have now an overall increase of 20hp and 60Nm (44lb ft) when compared with their predecessors. The new engines can spin up to 7,500rpm which doesn’t sound too bad, for a turbo motor.

Porsche claims that thanks to the new powertrains, the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S are up to 12% more fuel efficient than before, averaging 7.4lt/100km (31.8mpg US) and 7.7lt/100km (30.5 mpg US) respectively and when equipped with the double-clutch PDK gearbox.

How fast I hear you wondering? A 911 Carrera Coupe with PDK and Sport Chrono Pack now does the 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in 4.2 seconds and onto a top speed of 295km/h (183mph). Similarly, the more powerful 911 Carrera S model with the same options can drop the first figure under the 4 sec mark, meaning 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 308km/h (191mph).

The styling was freshened up by using the usual recipe: different bumpers, redesigned headlights with integrated daytime running lights up front, a revised rear engine lid with different air scoops necessary for the cooling of the new motors and a set of revised rear lights among others. Porsche has also added a 7inch infotainment system and a smaller, 918-style steering wheel which are the main upgrades of the cabin.

The public debut of the facelifted 991 at Frankfurt Motor Show was somehow shadowed by the unveiling of the gorgeous and electric Mission E Concept, but this doesn’t detract anything from the importance of the new model which goes on sale in Germany on early December and in the US in March 2016.
