The fastest pair of 911s you can get were updated to match the recent overhaul of Porsche’s iconic sports car, gaining even more speed in the process.

Porsche has released new photos of their range-toppers, located in the Kyalami race track in South Africa, where the official press launch is currently happening.

Both versions now gain 20hp, with the Turbo having 540PS (533hp) and the Turbo S 580PS (572hp). The power increase came from the use of modified inlet ports in the cylinder head, new injection nozzles and higher fuel pressure while the Turbo S getting new turbochargers with larger compressors as well.

A key new feature is what Porsche calls Dynamic Boost. The system was designed to shorten the time it takes for a turbo engine to react to throttle load alternations, minimizing the lag almost completely. This can be done as the system keeps the turbochargers spinning when the driver takes his foot off the throttle, maintaining the charge pressure by keeping the throttle valve open but interrupting the supply of fuel.

The system remains active all the time but Porsche claims “more pronounced effects” in the Sport driving modes. A rotary switch on the new 360mm steering wheel offers four driving modes Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual. When one of the Sport modes is enabled, the overboost function is too, with maximum torque boosted from 660Nm to 710Nm (486lb ft to 523lb ft) in the Turbo and from 700Nm to 750Nm (516lb ft to 553lb ft) in the Turbo S.

The updated 911 Turbo now sprints to 60mph from standstill in 2.9 seconds (0-100km/h in 3.0 seconds) with a top speed of 199mph (320km/h). Similarly the Turbo S scores a 2.8 seconds for the 0-60mph (2.9 seconds for the 0-100km/h), with the top speed now rated at 205mph (330km/h).

Both models now offer better fuel economy too thanks to the new electronic management for the engine and the transmission, with the Turbo and the Turbo S returning a combined 9.1lt/100km NEDC, a saving of 0.6lt/100km over the previous versions.

Yes, the mighty-quick 911 Turbo and Turbo S not only got a little bit quicker but are also more economical. Is there anything this car can’t really do?
