Dave Mirra, the brilliant BMX rider, part-time rally driver and competitor in ironman and triathlons, unfortunately passed away aged 41.

Greenville police confirmed Thursday night that the talented athlete has been found earlier in the day in a parked truck, with what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon”, said Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas in a statement.

Before the tragedy, Mirra uploaded two pictures on his Instagram profile, one of them depicting him and his wife with the caption saying “My rock! Thank god”.

The deceased was an American extreme sports athlete, winning a medal at the X Games in every year from 1995 through 2009. He won a total of 24 medals at the X games; a record which stood until 2013, when it was beaten by Bob Burnquist.

From 2008 to 2013, he also competed in rallying as a member of Subaru Rally Team USA.

David Mirra is survived by his wife and two daughters.
