VW has received a  5-star safety rating for their Golf family from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which runs the government’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

The Golf models awarded with five stars are from the 2016MY in regular, GTI, R and SportWagen flavors, and they join the Passat, Jetta and Beetle Coupe, which share the same safety rating.

Volkswagen is delighted that the Golf family models have earned the highest 5-star overall crash test rating from the government—providing further validation that Volkswagen produces some of the safest vehicles in the industry“, commented VW of America’s VP for Product Marketing and Strategy, Joerg Sommer.

In addition to the 5-star ratings from NHTSA, four VW models also earned Top Safety Pick+ from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), when equipped with the optional Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking. These are the 2016 Golf 4-door, including Golf SportWagen, Golf GTI 4-door, Jetta and Passat.

IIHS’ safety program awards cars with “Top Safety Pick+” when they have met the criteria-good ratings in moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, while achieving advanced or superior rating for the front crash prevention system performance, a program launched in 2013.
