If Darth Vader had a car, this would probably be it.

We know, it’s a played out cliché, but this Mercedes AMG GT RR mirrors the fictional character in appearance and sound almost to perfection. Of course, that wasn’t Mercedes’ intention, as any true gearhead would instantly tell you that the vehicle is reminiscent of the original Mercedes Benz 300SL W194, but the matte black hue adds to its villainous character.

The GT RR (like the GT3) is based on Merc’s AMG GT supercar (obviously), but unlike the road-going version, this one is powered by a 6.3-litre, naturally aspirated V8 – taken from the older SLS model – that complies to FIA’s GT3 rules. Furthermore, the AMG GT RR is built for Japan’s Super GT series, and this video announces the vehicle’s 2016 racing debut (the “standard” GT3 model was first unveiled at the 2015 Geneva motorshow), set to hit the track at the Okayama International Circuit.

Meanwhile, we’re waiting for the Mercedes AMG GT R – expected to show up in the metal at the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed in June – which will come with active aerodynamics and with a 100 kg (220lbs) weight loss. The overall modifications under the hood will also bump its power close to the 600 HP mark.
