The solution to Volkswagen’s diesel drama may include a large check for the hundreds of thousands of American TDI owners caught in the scandal.

According to Reuters and German newspaper Die Welt, VW may pay $5,000 to customers of the estimated 600,000 TDI vehicles equipped with a device to skirt emissions regulations as part of a settlement with the U.S. government agencies.

This comes on the eve of the Thursday deadline for VW to present a plan to a judge in San Francisco to get the diesel vehicles to comply with standards after it was announced last fall they had been polluting far more than allowed since 2008.

The report states the $5,000 would be on top of any fixes the company has to make to affected VW, Audi and Porsche models.

A buyback offer, as Reuters reported earlier Wednesday, is also rumored to be part of the plan presented to the judge.

Bits of what might be part of the plan continue to trickle out, but details are likely to be finalized over the next few months. If you have one of these TDIs, the wait continues.
