The 2016 edition of the Gumball 3000 claimed its first metal victim, when a rare Gumpert Apollo crashed in the first leg of the competition.

Besides impressing everyone with its radical looks, the Apollo is first and foremost a very capable and potent track performer. It might be road-legal, but the circuit is where it really shines, especially the 800 PS (789 HP) race-spec edition.

Taken on the streets of the United Kingdom on a damp day, passing through Scotland on its way to Bucharest, the car skidded off the road narrowly missing a tree after losing traction over a puddle of water.

Fortunately, both passengers were uninjured, and the car – part of the London Motor Museum collection – emerged relatively unscathed from the incident. It was even started and driven a few meters to the recovery vehicle.

Created in 1999, the idea behind Gumball 3000 was to combine cars with music, fashion and entertainment, but it quickly gained fame and notoriety due to its speeding participants.

Till this day, the rally remains a gathering of affluent individuals with high-end automobiles, who travel from one exotic location to another.
