On the back of Mercedes-Benz’s impending jump into the pickup truck market, BMW has hinted that it too could ditch with tradition and launch a similar model.
While speaking with Motoring, the company’s Australian managing director Marc Werner said that a BMW ute is possible, even though it would be harder for BMW to create such a model than Mercedes.
When asked about a rival to the Mercedes ute/pick-up, Werner said “We’re watching the space closely. Never say never…a ute is certainly an interesting proposition. Yes it’s harder for us but we’ll be watching how Benz goes.”
Because Mercedes produces commercial vehicles and vans, it is much more suited to create such a car. What’s more, it’s already been confirmed that Merc’s pick-up will be heavily based around the Nissan Navara and finding a donor vehicle for BMW could prove more difficult.
With that being said, the German firm’s ongoing tie-up with Toyota to launch a Z4 replacement and next-gen Supra could be extended potentially to the point of the popular Toyota Hilux being used by BMW to create a luxurious and high-end alternative.
If such a model ever comes to fruition, don’t expect to see it before 2020.
