There is a piece of advice every driver has heard: You should never hit the road before warming up the engine, but does it really apply to modern times?

In one word no, as Jason Fenske from EngineeringExplained says in the video that follows, as almost every vehicle built over the last quarter of century has fuel injection, which compensates for temperature changes.

On a really cold day, Mr. Fenske advises fellow drivers to wait between 15 and 30 seconds to make sure that the oil is flowing, or to simply scrape off the windows after turning the key into the ignition and then to drive off. Idling the engine will keep it colder for a longer time than by driving the car away, and the sooner the oil gets to optimal operating temperature, the quicker it will start to prevent wear.

Nevertheless, having the advantages of fuel injection rather than driving with one or more carburetors instead, doesn’t mean that you should go drag racing before warming up the engine, and it’s common sense that you don’t do burnouts or rev into the red zone, that is if you want to enjoy that car for long periods of time, of course.
