Roborace has unveiled the final design for its autonomous race car which will compete in a one-make series alongside Formula E from next year.

Designed by the man behind the Light Cycle from Tron:Legacy, the Roboracers look unlike any other race car before. And that’s appropriate because this is something we’ve never seen before; a dedicated race car which drives itself powered solely by electricity.

The vehicle’s completed design is very similar to the initial renderings released earlier in the year. That means the front end is characterised by swollen and floating wheel arches. Also of note is the ‘body’ of the vehicle, a narrow tube running just off-center which would normally hold the driver. In this case however, it helps store much of the vehicle’s advanced technologies.

Specifics about the powertrain haven’t been released but we know the car will run thanks to a host of cameras, radar and lidar systems as well as an advanced operating system provided by Nvidia. Active aerodynamics will also be featured.

Thanks to the aerodynamic design, the cars will apparently be able to reach 180 mph (289 km/h) down long straights.
