Used car sales have gone up 8% in the first six months of the year, which comes down to over 4 million vehicles sold, up by over 300,000 compared to the same period in 2015.

This also marks the first time that used car sales have sailed past four million in the first half of any year on record, as new car sales only managed to peak at slightly over 1,420,000 during the first six months of 2016.

As reported by Autoexpress, the month of April saw over 760,000 used cars sold in the UK alone – presumably a direct result of the plate change from March and the more competitive prices.

Speaking of being competitive, the Ford Fiesta is proving to be unrivaled in both new and used car sales over the first half of the year. In fact, superminis have accounted for over a third of all used buys this year, as small family cars account for a further 27.2% of used sales.

“The UK’s used car market is at its strongest ever, and that’s great news for buyers,” said Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders). “The growth in the used car market has reflected record demand for new cars in recent years, but future growth in high cost purchases will depend on stable consumer and business confidence.”
