Kevin Magnussen was involved in one of the most horrific Formula One crashes in recent memory during yesterday’s Belgian Grand Prix.
The Renault F1 driver lost control at the top of Raidillon hill at the famed Spa Francorchamps circuit, just after the Eau Rouge. After crossing the inner curb, the rear wheels on the Renault lost traction. Magnussen attempted to correct the slide but the car violently fishtailed off the track and span 360 degrees.
The car’s rear clipped a tire barrier at approximately 150 mph (240 km/h) before spearing the car head on into another tire wall. The impact was so forceful that the car’s head restraint flew from the vehicle on impact.
Magnussen managed to get out of the car unaided but was seen gingerly limping away from the wreckage. After being taken to the on-track medical center and then a nearby hospital, he was given the all clear with nothing but a sore ankle.
Subject to a final medical inspection on Thursday, the Danish driver will be ready for next week’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
