There’ll be no shortage of new metal (and carbon) on display at the BMW stand at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. And among them will be the special-edition i8 you see here.

Called the Protonic Dark Silver Edition, it’s the second such special take on the hybrid sports car following the Protonic Red edition revealed earlier this year in Geneva. Like the scarlet version, this latest example is distinguished primarily by its unique paintjob, only this time it’s decidedly more subtle.

Rather than limit production to a specific number, BMW is set to build as many as customers order before the books close at the end of the year. Production is set to commence in December at BMW’s plant in Leipzig, where the Bavarian automaker produces the 1 Series, 2 Series, i3 and i8 – just across town from the plant where Porsche builds the Macan, Cayenne and Panamera.

The dark-silver i8 will make its debut at the Parisian expo alongside the recently upgraded i3 and C Evolution electric scooter, as well as the 3 Series Gran Turismo – and, we’re expecting, the new 5 Series as well.
