More Than 60 Exotics Unite In Aussie Motoring Nirvana

As the sun began to rise and exotics started to flock to Melbourne car dealership Lorbek Luxury Cars, there was a buzz in the air that the day was going to be rather special. Soon, it became obvious why.

For Otium Club’s latest drive day, over 60 of the city’s most exquisite cars gathered for a day of driving through some of the state’s finest roads, combining both blissfully smooth highways with difficult-to-master forest passes and a blast along the always-magnificent Great Ocean Road.

As always, the cars that attended were a mishmash of European exotics, Japanese sports cars, American pwer and even some home-grown muscle. Just before the drive started, fellow owners were flabbergasted by the bright yellow Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 SV Roadster that turned up, only recently delivered to its owner. Bathed in every possible carbon fiber option, including massive SV stickers, it proved a real treat throughout the day, particularly when blasting along the highway. There’s really no beating a high-revving naturally-aspirated V12 engine made in Italy. A symphony in the truest sense of the word.

Some other highlights were a matte black Aventador, a stunning V8-powered Ford GT40 replica, Audi R8 GT Spyder, Honda NSX and the rather rare BMW M3 GTS. Australia’s very own Quantum GP700 was also there, a car which promises performance to beat a Bugatti Veyron thanks to its twin-supercharged 2.7-liter engine delivering 709 hp.

Once all the cars had gathered, we headed towards Geelong via the Princess Freeway before veering inland to head down to the Great Ocean Road. As it was a Sunday, traffic along the GOR was bound to be bad, so on the way to Lorne, we went the back way, through the forest roads just south of Deans Marsh.

Frequented almost exclusively by locals, this ribbon of tarmac is a welcome relief from the tourist-filled roads found nearby. Consisting solely of flowing bends and very few straights, it allowed drivers to push their cars and test them out. While some were wagging their tails out of corners under power, other, lighter, and less powerful sports cars stayed glued to the road.

After screaming down this road and with brakes red hot, we hit the Great Ocean Road at Lorne and headed north-east back to Geelong. Surprisingly, the traffic wasn’t all that bad, meaning we could enjoy the twists and turns of what is arguably Australia’s most famous road. Considering how beautifully it combines a smooth surface with sweeping and tight bends as well as a few straights to blast along (at the speed limit of course…), it’s always a thrill to drive.

To end the cruise, we headed to the wonderful Mount Dundeed Estate but not before the heavens opened and blasted the road with heavy spats of rain, making the roads more icy than Walter White. As quickly as the rain came, it stopped and the sun began to shine once again as the perfectly manicured grass at the estate welcomed us and provided for a lovely spot to gather the cars and end what was a wonderful day.

Seeing an exotic on the road is always a treat. Seeing dozens and dozens gathered together is extraordinary. A true to sight to behold. Something we’ll never get sick of.
