Toyota FT-4X Trademark Hints At New FJ Cruiser

Is Toyota working on a successor to the FJ Cruiser? Maybe, if this latest trademark filing is anything to go by.

According to our compatriots at AutoGuide, Toyota recently filed the name FT-4X. The FT designation stands for Future Toyota and has been used in recent years on the FT-1 concept to preview the forthcoming Supra, and the FT-86 that foreshadowed the arrival of the GT86. The “4X” part tells us it’s likely a 4×4 – either that or it’s delving into the foreign currency exchange market).

That doesn’t necessarily mean a new FJ Cruiser is on the way, but whatever vehicle might emerge will likely take the place vacated by the FJ’s departure from US showrooms in 2004 and the complete end of its production just a couple of months ago.

Should such a new off-roader reach production, it would be in good company. Ford recently confirmed a new Bronco is on the way, Jeep is working on a new Wrangler, Land Rover has a new Defender in the works. The bottom line is that two-door off-roading trucks are making a comeback, and we won’t be surprised to see Toyota and others joining the fray in the coming years.

I would rather guess it is the new Landcruiser. They (the LC150 and LC200) are due for replacement in the not too distant future.

If the new Bronco wasn’t coming out, this would probably be my next SUV(unless the next Wrangler is just that much better then both of them).

There’s a typo, Toyota stopped FJ Cruiser production in 2014, not 2004. Hopefully whatever 4wd vehicle Toyota is planning to bring hits the right price point everything is so expensive nowadays!

  • ok

FJ cruiser is still sold in some markets and Toyota still sells the Land Cruiser 71. 70 series family is getting an update end of this year.

    FT-4X, huh.

I like cars that are financially curious…

I’ve been wanting a new off roader and i’ve been looking for FJ’s to buy, but if they’re gonna bring it back I can wait a little longer.

    Dear Toyota,

Can we as consumers get four normal doors this go round? You can even kind of hide the handles and point them up and down like you do on the Tundra; whatever floats your boat. But please, don’t commit suicide doors. We all care too much.

    Sincerely,
    T-Cake

I looked at a few used models but they’re still very pricey. And after sitting inside the cabin you then realize that this vehicle is more about hype than substance. Incredibly cheap looking dash with 1990 style and ergonomics. I’d take a Wrangler over this thing.

The last FJ was a design exercise. The interior packaging was terrible. Do a New one much closer to the original.

    • ok

The true successor of the original is still in production. Just google land cruiser 71
