Alfa Romeo Alfetta Wants To Bring The Fight To BMW’s 5-Series

The Giulia and Stelvio are currently the ones tasked with making Alfa Romeo’s long-awaited revival a reality, but if it wants to broaden its line-up then the Italian automaker could certainly use an executive saloon, too.

Expected in a couple of years probably under the Alfetta moniker, the new should use a modified version of the platform that currently underpins the Giulia.

Challenging the likes of the Volvo S90, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series and Audi A6, among others, the Alfetta is believed to be instantly recognizable as an Alfa Romeo, most likely taking more than a few cues from the Giulia.

However, it’s still too early to talk about its exact look, but if it looks anything like RennaDesign’s rendering, which we see here, then it will be quite a looker and might actually convince a number of customers to steer clear of those (mostly) German dealerships.

He’s onto something. And unlike other renderings, it actually shows a non-QV model, which is embarrassingly refreshing.

    • Nordschleife

But it has the clover on the fender so this may be his version of the QV.

    Alfa schnozz on a Ghibli?

  • Bash

    I like it… its (cheesy)….
some ppl with get it 😀

  • Merc1

If they do this, you can forget the Ghibli. Hell the Gulia Q already makes the Maser pointless and they’re not even in the same size class.

    • europeon

Only a 15 year old can say such a thing. There is so much more to a car than a powerful engine, but you don’t seem to understand that.

  • BarryFastCars

I feel this is a bad idea. There is no need for Alfa to be in that market. Maserati already makes a bad car, the Ghibli, to not do battle against mid size competitors. This is why I feel Sergio Marchionne is a terrible CEO. This idea stretches their recourses far thinner than necessary at least for now. He needs to figure out what the hell to do over at Chrysler and Dodge for cars before Alfa competes against the new 5 and E class. They should just worry about operational efficiency and quality of their two relatively solid offerings. A real sports car on the Giulia platform would be good. Maserati needs serious help too.

    • Markey

Alfa needs a fuller range to increase dealership traffic, and a full size sedan is a must, even if it means small numbers.
And by following BMW’s approach (i.e. a 5 which takes many clues from a 3) they can achieve many economies of scale.
These in turn can benefit Dodge as a re-skinned Alfetta will make for a perfect new Charger.
After all, for both Alfa and Dodge, the recipe is products = sales

  • WG

This rendering’s design doesn’t look sophisticated enough to compete against those offerings from the German brands.

  • dj_aris

How about some plans for more afforadable cars? 156 / 159 competed with sedans like Passat, Mondeo, Vectra etc, offering a sportier and more beautiful alternative. Maybe even a tad pricier but usually better spec’d as well. That is no longer the case (now they compete with BMW, Merc & Audi) and they will also make the Giulietta RWD (thus more expensive I guess) as well as phase out the Mito. I feel that selling fewer and pricier cars is less efficient than selling more at a lesser price. But I’m sure Sergio knows better. Or does he, Lancia?

    • Tumbi Mtika

      Oooh, BURN!

  • Jorge Teixeira

Seeing that the Giulia QV is powered by a Ferrari-designed V6, maybe the Alfetta QV will have a V8. I’m salivating…

  • Elmediterraneo

Alfa Romeo Alfetta Quadrifoglio : Ferrari 3.8 liter V8 twin turbo 600 hp ??

    • Kaisuke971

Probably 610hp exactly like the GTC4 Lusso T or even a bit more if they want to be competitive. 600hp is kinda last gen…

  • Alfa are so, so far behind competitors when it comes to quality, they have a mountain to climb before they can even think about producing a 5 Series competitor.

    • Markey

go to the nearest dealer. try a Giulia. you might be in for a surprise..

      • Not likely given reviews I’ve read state interior quality for the Giulia is disappointing and does not match rivals. I can’t see them suddenly reaching 5 Series levels. Or even close. The interior quality of the £60,000 4C is not just lacklustre, its plain hilarious. I know there’s much more to a car than interior quality though.

        • Markey

Some reviews say that. Other reviews say that it betters the Germans. That is why I suggest to go there and make your own mind, scrapping any preconceptions. As I said, you might be in for a surprise.
On a side-note, in MY OWN, personal judgement, the Giulia’s interior is nicer than that of a 3 series in both design AND materials quality. And the 3 is the one to compare it to, not the bigger 5.
Oh, I forgot to tell, I do love beemers, and have owned a few. I am most definitely NOT biased anti BMW or in favour of Alfa. But the Giulia is a beauty, inside and out.
And I agree with you on the 4C

    • dj_aris

Define “quality”. Because one cares about the soft-touch plastics on the dash, or about eliminating some minor trim noises, while others (myself included) care more about a reliable car. And on that one, my MY2010 Alfa has been way better than my 3 previous German cars.

  • Enter Ranting

    That’s a nice pipe dream…

    • Robert Gentilini

Remenber Fiat bought Dodge?(they own Dodge and is not producing cars to your expectations). FCA marketing plan is to increase Jeep to # 1 production/sales ,Ram # 2 . 3.Alfa Romeo and Maserati and specialty muscle cars, were the markup is high. FCA was producing cars at an 8 percent average while GM at 12%. FCA has changed the strategy to a percentage of 12% to 20%. is not a matter who produces more…..but in the long run who is more profitable more profit more research and additional models . that is what mercedes, bmw and Audi are doing. capisci!

Chrysler is doing more for Fiat than itself.
