New Range Rover Velar Coupe-SUV Reportedly Coming To The Geneva Motor Show

Land Rover is looking to steal sales away from the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe as well as the Porsche Macan with a new coupe-SUV that will go under the Range Rover brand.

A new report from Autocar that also includes the renders you see here claims that the British company will revive the ‘Velar’ nameplate that was used on secret prototypes of the original Range Rover in the late 1960s.

The Velar moniker was trademarked almost a year ago, along with the I-Pace and I-Type names, which are already used on two Jaguars, an EV crossover concept and a zero-emission racer that competes in the FIA Formula E Championship.

Returning to the Range Rover Velar, it’s expected to slot between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport featuring sportier profile with a sloping roofline.  It will be based on JLR’s aluminum-intensive architecture, shared with the Jaguar F-Pace, and like the latter, it will place more focus on delivering performance in urban rather than off-road settings.

The engine lineup will likely include four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, along with a possible supercharged V8 in the range-topping SVR. Moreover, previous reports indicate a possible all-electric variant that could join the lineup at some point, though a hybrid, based on the 3.0-liter V6 diesel used in the current Range Rover Sport, sounds more likely.

The report from the British magazine says that Land Rover will drop the curtain for the new Range Rover Velar in less than a month’s time at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

    Not. A. Coupe.

Still don’t get the point of building this car… The JLR group made a SUV for a brand that didn’t need one (F-pace) and now they realized Land Rover didn’t have one in that segment so they’re making an entirely new one to compete with the F-pace… I just don’t get it

    • seriously

Your whole point makes no sense, Jaguar was the only mainstream luxury brand without an SUV now in gaining one it has increased Jaguars sales by a large amount. Thats the problem with bloggers 1. they know nothing of business 2. nothing on car markets 3. both would have been solved by just reading instead of spouting a bunch of nonsense. The X6, and GLE are both pointless SUVs and sell incredibly well they are less practical versions of a vehicle built for practicality so yes it makes sense for Land Rover a company that only produces SUVs to target cars that are enjoying a nice profit margin by being more expensive derivatives of other vehicles.

the thing is don’t build cars that compete with your own line-up… Jaguar should focus on luxury sedans and sport cars cuz that’s what they do best and Land Rover should focus on making great and reliable SUVs, just don’t make SUVs for both brands cuz they will cannibalize their own sales

If you took a course in brand marketing, it is the complete opposite of what you are saying. GM for example, has Tahoe, Yulkon, Escalade;VW – Macan, Q5, etc…

I hate that SUV/Crossover Coupe is a thing. I mean I already hated that Four-Door Coupes existed but this is just too much. In all honestly, from the render and spy shots, what makes this a coupe? Why not just say its an X3, GLC, NX competitor?
